Two persons served by Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries, Christina Burr of Pineville and Melanie Starr of Natchitoches, were honored at the 10th Annual Employment Development Services Worker of the Year Awards luncheon held recently in Baton Rouge.
More than 450 people, including 11 from Evergreen, attended the event to honor the program's workers with disabilities. Thirty-nine nominations were received for Worker of the Year, with first place going to a New Orleans woman. The three top winners were presented with cash awards and a special certificate signed by Gov. Kathleen Blanco. The honorable mentions, including Burr and Starr, received a plaque and check for $25.
Sara Kendall, program manager with the Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities and Gaylon Dighton, EDS board president, presented the top awards.
Selection of the winners was by a special volunteer WOY Committee from the Greater Baton Rouge area. Each attendee received a traditional box of cookies baked by persons with disabilities from the Silver Lining Pie Co., a division of the Avoyelles Comprehensive Employment Services of Marksville (ACES).
