The Red River Room at Harrah's Louisiana Downs was festive on May 8, 2007 with over 400 people in attendance. Thirty celebrity waiters, sponsors and attendees enjoyed a night full of fun and laughs while raising nearly $110,000 prior to and during the event for Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries.
Each celebrity waiter decorated the tables and dressed thematically: among them the 1950's, Elvis, Sunset at the Beach, Hunting, Fishing, LSU Football, and many others. Thirty community and business leaders, which included managers and associates from 7 Wal-Mart stores in Market 422, that agreed to serve as waiters gave of their time, money and talent to benefit the nearly 900 people supported by Evergreen. Emcee, Teddy Allen, writer for the Shreveport Times, orchestrated the event while Bob Griffin, KSLA Sportscaster, moved among the crowd to encourage tipping Even President John joined the fun by wearing an apron and participating in the activities at his table.
There were clients from the Ravendale and Terrace Drive Community Home that sang a beautiful song they learned in bible study at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Dennis McCaskill received a standing ovation for his heartfelt performance of "God Bless the U.S.A." with no music and no hesitation.
As the evening came to a close, the best themed table was announced with Clint and Gracie McAlister, the 1950's table, winning a suite party at Harrah's Louisiana Downs for 20 people. The winner of the coveted "Most Appreciated Celebrity Waiter" award, raising the most tips at this table, was Retired Bossier District Judge Cecil Campbell, raising over $3200 in tips. Campbell stepped in with his auctioneer talents, auctioning off centerpieces for celebrity waiters. One LSU centerpiece went for $750. Campbell received two airline tickets with a value up to $1,000 as his award.
Thanks again to those who sponsored this event.
