Bernard Wagner, Ph.D., president of Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries, headquartered in Bossier City, received the American Association on Mental Retardation’s Service Award at its 127th annual meeting and international awards program held in Chicago.
AAMR is an interdisciplinary association of professionals, parents, consumers and other groups interested in mental retardation.

Wagner, a past president of AAMR and member for 29 years, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Denver and his masters and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois. His 40-year career in the field of mental retardation involves working in state institutional settings and the private, non-profit sector.

Evergreen is a not-for-profit service agency/mission of the Synod of the Sun, Presbyterian Church, serving nearly 800 people with disabilities in five states. Wagner has been instrumental in the growth of the agency, expanding its service area, tripling the number of individuals served and supported and establishing a reputation for excellence. Evergreen has developed model programs in areas of home ownership and leadership development.

Wagner has been actively involved in significantly reducing the size of institutions and developing community alternatives.
