Lamell with Christie Whitman when she was EPA administrator
Lamell, left, with Dr. Bob Ballard, best known for his 1985 discovery of the wreck of the Titanic. Stanley James Lamell, a former student of Evergreen Vocational School (1969-1972), contacted us via our website and said he was among Evergreen’s success stories. Lamell’s home was in Baton Rouge, but he came to Evergreen from New York and was functionally illiterate with a stated personality disorder. A great deal of time was spent on remedial reading and job readiness skills. He ran track and went to the national Special Olympics in Los Angeles while at Evergreen and won numerous medals. Lamell, now 49, entered the U.S. Navy in 1972 with a desire to travel and is now retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 21.5 years of service. He is a licensed merchant marine chief engineer officer aboard an Environmental Protection Agency research ship in the Great Lakes. He has numerous service medals and awards, boxing trophies and holds the record for his ship’s crew in running the mile. He has a home in Milwaukee, Wisc., and is proud of his two children in college in Mississippi.
